1. SANKOFA TA-NEHISI COATES DC BOOK

Sankofa Video and Books and the Washington, DC community will host the DC Launch of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ book, WE WERE EIGHT YEARS IN POWER: An American Tragedy, celebrating the highly anticipated and timely work of this talented son of the DMV. “I grew up surrounded by Black books, reared by a father who spent much of his adult life either running a bookstore or a publishing company. I was made, as a writer and as a human, by Black books. Those bookstores that specialize in this literature are sacred. 2. MULTIFLORA MUSIC FESTIVAL 2017

Multiflora is launching its first multicultural festival this October that will be spread across multiple venues throughout the district. Multiflora is a celebration of the history, culture and artistic expressions of D.C. and other cities throughout the globe. Art, music and our communities are inextricably linked to and profoundly impacted by the diverse cultures found throughout the world. Their mission is to present international artists from abroad as well as showcase the diverse multicultural communities in the region.Learn more here.
3. JESS HILARIOUS COMEDY SHOW
Wednesday, October 11, 2017, 7:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.
Social media superstar Jess Hilarious is hitting the road for a stand-up comedy tour, and DC is in her sights. More than 1.7 million people follow her on Instagram, and millions more have watched her on “Wild N Out.” But these shows are a side of Jess that most people are getting to see for the first time. Join them for her DC Improv headlining debut!

4. SOKA TRIBE DANCE FITNESS DC

Join the Soka Tribe! They whine and work up a sweat to Caribbean and Afro beats. This power hour workout increases strength, muscle tone, and endurance. 5. OPENING OF THE WHARF

Mark your calendar for four days of live music, fabulous food, and fun at the Southwest Waterfront as we celebrate the long-awaited opening of The Wharf. The District’s biggest neighborhood event will feature free live entertainment, headliner bands, restaurant openings from DC’s hottest chefs, debuts of iconic shops, and lots of waterside activities and games concluding both Thursday and Sunday with sunset fireworks. Join Opera Outside for a casual outdoor concert on the upper field of Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park. Enjoy performances of operatic gems and other favorites by an ensemble of exciting rising stars. 9. ROCK YO RIZOS PRESENTS: ONE YEAR LATER
Saturday, October 14, 2017, 6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Mel created the “#IamlettingGO” campaign to connect women across social media who felt alone during any type of life transition be it a relocation, marriage, childbirth or starting a business. Many stories were being shared that connected individuals through their beautiful struggles. For the first week of the campaign, Mel shared on her social media outlets what she was letting go of and encouraged her followers to do the same using the hashtag #iamlettingGO. Over 500 people have shared to date. Ultimately, she revealed the process and the reasons for shaving her signature shoulder-length curls as part of her “letting go” process. 10. BLACK PRESIDENT DAY: A CELEBRATION OF FELA KUT
Saturday, October 14, 2017, 9:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m.
The official DC Felabration returns this year with our own tricked-out version of Kalakuta and The Shrine. We are taking over a converted space and making it our own as we celebrate the one and only Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Five DJs are Spinning a Fela-centered and inspired set all night long.
