There is always something to do in the D! Here is a list of my curated event list for Black professionals in Detroit this week.
1. LITTLE CAESARS ARENA PREVIEW WEEK
Tuesday, September 5, 2017 – Sunday, September 10, 2017
Little Caesars Arena, the new home of the Detroit Pistons and Red Wings located in the heart of The District Detroit, will be hosting a week of exclusive events and activities before its official grand opening on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Fans, partners and members of the community will have the opportunity to preview the state-of-the-art arena, which will house more than 20,000 people. Learn more here.
2. FULL MOON YOGA
Wednesday, September 6, 2017, 8:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Looking for a non-violent way to release all that built-up, 9-to-5 tension? Our friends at Spiritual Detoxing will be hosting an hour-long session of yoga, meditation, energy cleansing and self-healing under the Pisces Full Moon. Tickets are $20. Learn more here.
3. GRIOT MUSIC LOUNGE HAPPY HOUR
Thursday, September 7, 2017, 5:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.
If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Griot Music Lounge, come kick it this Thursday for their weekly happy hour. I’ve heard it’s one of the coolest, low-key spots in Detroit where they only play vinyl records from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Drink specials are all night and complimentary select appetizers are available before 6:30 p.m. Learn more here.
4. SKIP FRIDAYS AT 3FIFTY TERRACE
Friday, September 8, 2017, 5:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m.
The last days of summer are upon us, which means all the rooftop parties, music festivals and other random outdoorsy shenanigans will soon be coming to an end. Enjoy the last of it this Friday at Detroit’s staple afterwork rooftop event, complete with good vibes, good music and good, after-five ratchetry. Learn more here.
5. IN D’CUT
Friday, September 8, 2017, 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m.
There will be a free event at the Campbell Terrace in the Dequindre Cut. Full disclosure: I’m not familiar with any of the musical performances or DJs, so the crowd may be a bit…eccentric. But it’s free and sounds like it’ll be a pretty cool event. Maybe like how The Do-Over was last weekend? That was fun. Learn more here.
6. DALLY IN THE ALLEY
Saturday, September 9, 2017, 11:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m.
Detroit’s longest-running street festival has returned for its 40th year to celebrate the rich diversity of the city. Set in the streets and alleyways of the historic Cass Corridor, the free, all-day event will feature live performances by local musicians, and will also include a number of local artists, restaurants, vendors and more. Learn more here.
7. MEXICANTOWN BAR TOUR
Saturday, September 9, 2017, 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.
Mexicantown is one of the oldest, most cultural neighborhoods in the city. While it’s highly noted for its delicious, authentic Mexican cuisine, it also has a budding nightlife scene with some cool spots. Join the Detroit Experience Factory for a walking bar tour featuring a brief history lesson of the area. Tour stops will include El Club, Giovanni’s Lounge and Donovan’s Pub. Learn more here.
8. SNOOP DOGG
Saturday, September 9, 2017, 7:30 p.m.
Uncle Snoop is coming to the MotorCity Sound Board to get us high — literally and figuratively — on our favorite gangsta rap hits. All guests must be at least 21 years of age with valid photo ID. Tickets range from $50-$65. Learn more here.
9. THOTS & PRAYERS
Saturday, September 9, 2017, 10:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m.
Thots & Prayers is returning for its second year at the Temple Bar in Midtown. Keep the vibes flowing from Dally in the Alley by turning up at one of the livest LGBTQ parties in Detroit. Learn more here.
10. UNIVERSOUL CIRCUS
Sunday, September 10, 2017, 6:30 p.m.
Coming back to channel some of our most cherished childhood memories, the most soulful circus in the land has returned for another year in The D. Come out with the kiddos for some electrifying, edge-of-your-seat performances, including extreme motorsports, mind-bending acrobats, free-flying aerial acts and much more. Learn more here.
