  1. Challenge to try every one of these before the year is out?…Accepted! (I have a head start but will post my progress and tag;)

  2. Oh for a summer off to float from place to place. I’m making a list and will visit each one of them leach time I visit New York, no matter how many trips it takes. These places are perfect examples of what we can do with a little imagination and motivation.

    1. It’s a beautiful thing. I am so glad that there are some in my neighborhood. I am planning on visiting as many as possible. Continue success a win for 2 is a win for all of us.

  3. I’ve heard of a few dined at 4 of the locations listed but woohoo to you for posting the list I’m gonna have fun trying them all no matter how long it takes

  4. & Williamsburg Music Center! I used to work there, it’s a little jazz club/bar, one of the only black owned and operated business of its kind left in the area.

  5. Great article ! I’ve been to a lot of these but will definitely work my way down the list this spring/summer 🙂

  6. I can not thank you enough for putting this together. I’ve been looking for black owned restaurants and wine bars for the longest. Thank You, Thank You Thank you!!! and oh yeah……THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  7. I was just searcing on the internet for black owned businesses, no need to search any more. Thanks a bunch!

    1. What a great resource to have to hand thanks to all your time and efforts.
Now we need a list like this for every major city worldwide.
Off the top of my head I’m struggling to think of 10 black owned businesses where I live in London.
      Welldone!

  8. Such a great list! Thanks for compiling. It’s so important to support our businesses.

  9. Thank you! FINALLY someone has answered my prayers and put together a list of Black owned restaurants! I go out with my buds a lot and would prefer to spend my money with my folks – we MUST support each other! From this day forward, all of our restaurant money will stay in the community. Who else will take care of us if we won’t?

  10. So many great spots in my second home (Harlem) that I didn’t know about. I sooo wanna explore. Who knows? Maybe I’ll make some friends along the way. Thank you for this list.

  11. Was searching for a black owned place with good food to celebrate an upcoming graduation. This is so timely! Thank you!

  12. I live in the East Bronx…Gun Hill & White Plains Rd…I need ya’ll to find some spots up here TOO…THANKS !!!

  13. Excellent! I love 67 Orange! I’ve been to most of these Harlem businesses… I need to check out the others

  14. Great list. Will definitely try a few of these whenever I’m in town. Looking forward to the upcoming list from other cities as well. Thanks for putting this together!!

  15. My hometown! OMG so glad to see so MANY classy black-owned spots. Been to a few, but now I have more when I visit. Great list! Thanks!

  16. I love this list! I was in Harlem exploring a few weeks ago, but this list is amazing.

  17. Good Evening,

I found your link on Facebook this evening. This complete list is fantastic. Thanks a bunch!

  18. I was looking for a good mother’s day brunch spot and happened upon this on Facebook. Thanks so much for this list. Now I have more spots to try. I love food.

  19. I’ve already been to quite a few on the list and will hit some others. Have to support black businesses.

  20. Perfect time for this information, I am about to visit NY (my hometown) and I will be checking out one or more of these spots.

  21. Happy to know I have been to a handful of these places. Vodou on a Friday or Saturday night is AWESOME. I even celebrated 2 birthdays there. I cant wait to try out more of these places.

  22. Can we please get list for London and Paris also?? Two cities with massive black populations we should support when traveling and living abroad!

  23. Luv it!!! – I’ve been to the Red Rooster 3 times and was interested in more Black owned restaurants – Thx so much for this – I’m from Newark but luv me some Harlem!!!!!!!!!!!!! After all that’s where I visited my Aunt every Sunday as a child!!! I am now 66 and still love Harlem

  24. Much appreciated for compiling this list. I have been to a few and familiar with many on the list. Being a vegan and not much of a drinker, it can limit my restaurant/lounge visits. I know these are quality businesses that deserve proper patronage. Much success and prosperity!!!

  25. Love this! I didn’t even realize some of these were AA owned (although I should have guessed that if they were caribbean right? lol) I’ve been too a couple and some of these are close to home so I’ll definitely be checking them out soon! Thanks! It’s great to support black businesses! 🙂

  26. Genese you are AWESOME for this!
I love this list! This is exactly what I was looking for to start planning my summer. Will there be a part two, maybe including a few places in Queens?

  27. Thank you for including my bar and lounge Brooklyn Wine Yard as well as seeing so many of my friends and associates like Therapy Wine Bar, Vodou, Elberta and Soco on this list. This is a great compilation and guide to black own lounges in NYC! #Cheers

  28. Genese, I love this! You are a mover and shaker in this wonderful city, keep it coming!

  29. I used your list to plan a weekend in Brooklyn with my husband. We went to Sugarcane on Saturday and Wray’s on Sunday. Both were very good. Sugarcane was a bit more upscale and very popular. I had my first Sorrel Martini and now I’m hooked! I had chicken roti and my husband had jerk salmon. I also had the jerk shrimp with plantain appetizer that was also very good. The food came out fast, fresh, hot and well seasoned. Wray’s only had people at one table when we arrived for Sunday brunch which worried us (Soco had a line out the door) but the food was fresh and delicious. I had catfish and rum infused waffles. My husband had ackee and salt fish with collards. Thank you for the list. I will use the DC list to plan another weekend getaway.

  30. Wonderful and worthy listing. Will definitely share with others. This is the “Cooperative Economics” that is expressed in the principles of Kwanzaa. I glad that I’ve been to a few of them already and now looking forward to patronize and experience that others.

  31. Great list! I’m up to five thus far. I used your list last night and had a great time at the shrine in Harlem. Please add the Bronx.

  32. Like so many have said, thank you for sharing this list! I have dined at some of the restaurants and look forward to trying some new places.

  33. This list is awesome..I forwarded the list to 35 of my friends..my lady and I are heading to Harlem to see “55 and Alive”on Sunday we are definitely going to check one of these places out..
